There was a time in my life, as a child, when I drew nothing but superheroes, figures, something I was natural at capturing; movement and body language. Several years ago, I returned to painting the human figure. I had already painted the human figure in my cityscapes of Europe, but I wanted to capture the figure up-close. I started painting women doing things like putting on their shoes or makeup. I found that beautiful, natural and raw. I started experimenting with strange angular shots of women taking their shoes off or wearing a beautiful gown, and once again I was noticed. This time by a huge company that prints artwork on “le femme” gear such as shoes and purses. Again I was feeling like I was doing something right. But all I can keep doing is continue to challenge my creative boundaries because, trust me, after all of this; there’s more to learn.

I started painting women, beautiful women, doing things that women do but things that are intimate, sexy but private. When I started, I was inspired by sketches by fashion designers who are so good at capturing body language, but I wanted to take it a step further. At first they were simple, almost comical, but I was determined to paint them more sophisticatedly. It started with this painting of a woman in monochromatic tones; I wanted the painting to look black and white. I came up with a color that captured the feeling I was looking for, which happened to be one color, and realized that painting with one color is just as beautiful as painting with many.

However, I still wanted to take figuratism to another level. I felt that the human body had many potential abstract compositions. I wanted to achieve abstract figurative painting using realistic impressionistic styles to capture the figures and the surroundings. I found that runways at fashion shows, with all the unconventional angles, the lighting, things people aren’t used to seeing, helped me engineer interesting painted subjects.

As I continue to delve into this, as my current study, I've found outstanding potential in creating an extensive body of work. As I do so, the images will appear on this page. I work out of my studio in Portland, OR. My work is shown at the Lawrence Gallery in the Pearl District.
