When I was 22, I’d already gone through art school at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, selectively taking classes on things I felt I needed to know and learn. Many times my teachers would use my work as example and sometimes they felt I was spinning my wheels, because I had already mastered the basics. What I needed was to go out into the world and learn. Then I got an opportunity to fly down to San Francisco to paint a mural at a Cajun restaurant. From there I was introduced to the trade of muraling, faux finishing, marbling, wood-graining and texturing. And I learned a valuable skill that I now incorporate in my gallery work. I created a business of painting murals and texturing walls, replicating stone and marble for restaurants, offices and residences. My paintbrush has known few limits, for each job was unique and wanted a different technique or style. And when asked to do something, like create Michelangelo’s Creation from the Sistine Chapel or turn synthetic columns into Carrara marble, or create impressionistic landscapes of European farmland or tropical landscapes in monochromatic palettes, I’ve always been able to master the look my client has asked for.

The balance of nature, when viewed, is quite unbalanced. So, in creating textures such as veins in marble, or mineral deposits in granite, or the movement in a 500 year old Venetian wall, I found myself using techniques I use in painting, such as scumbling or broad brush strokes. I don’t over think what I’m doing, I just gradually lay down tonal change, staying away from patterns, which overall give the realistic look of a slab of stone. The effectiveness is in the random color and its shadow tone. I’ve studied marble from around the world and come up with an unconventional style, portraying marble that is mistaken for real.

My faux finishing career has taken me to locations around the country, though most of my work has been done in the Pacific Northwest and the Bay Area. I've worked in client's homes, creating scenes of French country sides, Asian water closets, turn-of-the-century bar rooms, slate fire places, marbleizing synthetic columns, and fauxing rooms with aged or contemporary finishes. I've painted murals in restaurants, a New Orleans mural in a Cajun restaurant, cityscapes in French and Italian restaurants. I've made storefronts look like granite for national companies. Regardless of the scope of the project, I work intimately with my clients to create the style and atmosphere of their chosen artistic embellishment. I can produce sample boards of the various faux finishes that are shown on this webpage. I can and have travelled virtually anywhere.
